Books of the Bible, Abbreviated in English and German

This table is for those of us who get confused by the way our edition of Nestle-Aland’s Greek New Testament (Novum Testamentum Graece) records its abbreviations of biblical references. Now confused no more!

Here are the most pertinent abbreviations found in NA27/28 for my study of Old Testament quotations and allusions in the New Testement: Matthew (Mt), Mark (Mc), Luke (L), John (J), Acts of the Apostles (Act), Romans (R), 1 Corinthians (1K), 2 Corinthians (2K), Galatians (G), Ephesians (E), Philippians (Ph), Colossians (Kol), 1 Thessalonians (1Th), 2 Thessalonians (2Th), 1 Timothy (1T), 2 Timothy (2T), Titus (Tt), Philemon (Phm), Hebrews (H), James (Jc), 1 Peter (1P), 2 Peter (2P), 1 John (1J), 2 John (2J), 3 John (3J), Jude (Jd), and Revelation (Ap).

    Your Listing is very helpful. In Rudolf Bultmann’s 5th Edition Theologie des Neuen Testaments, 1965, he abbreviates references to Apk; Did; Barn; 1.Klem; 2.Klem; Ign Eph; Tr; Phld; Sm; Pol Phl; Herm vis II at the end of the Biblical references on pages 610 & 611, Stellenverzeichnis. Would you know what these abbreviations refer to?

      Hello Aub! Yes, these refer to portions of the NT or early church writings: Apk = Apocalypse, that is Revelation); Did = Didachē, or Teaching of the Twelve Apostles; Barn = Epistle of Barnabus; 1.Klem = First Epistle of Clement; Ign Eph = Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians; [Ign] Tr = Epistle of Ignatius to the Trallians; [Ign] Phld = … Philadelphians; [Ign] Sm = … Smyrnians; Pol Phl = Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians.
